Once upon a time there was an eighteen-year-old brown-skinned beauty from New York, who could render men helpless if she focused on them for more than a few seconds with her big brown eyes. She met a twenty-year-old West Indian Casanova who knew just what to say to keep himself from drowning in the gaze of those brown eyes. They spent the summer of 1982 running The Bronx streets together, and BONG, by 1983, they were the young parents of Moi, author Vanessa Moore! We all have two things; an interesting origin story and a super power. You now have the intro to my origin story, now let’s talk about my super power.
My father joined the United States Airforce right before receiving the news that he would indeed be a dad. So that left my mother to raise me with the help of her mother and sister. Watching three women navigate life and love was like being front row to an HBO drama series, but its where my superpower was born. I started spinning love tales in the seventh-grade and never stopped.
After having her my daughter in 2002, I graduated from Bronx Community College with an associate’s degree in Liberal Arts and Media Studies. A little over a decade later, I earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Lehman college. In August 2017 I finally took a stab at self-publishing one of my many Black love stories. The first in my novella series, Love and the Business: Ceecee and Lance introduced readers to my candid flow and ability to chronicle the joys and pains of love in action. Since then I’ve self-published four more novellas in the series and one standalone urban fiction novel, Jewels: An Urban Coming of Age Story.
My choice to self-publish led to a newfound passion for editing and interior book designing. I now offer these skills as a service to fellow independent authors. I’ve taken the time strenghthen my “super powers” in the Southern New Hampshire Creative Writing, MFA program. That degree will be complete as of December 2024. Aside from scribbling red lines and making notes in the margins for my clients, I teach fourth grade and guide adult students in pursuit of higher education. When I am not out making the literary world a better place, I spend time with her family which consists of my significant other, my daughter, my bonus daughter, my parents, my seven siblings, and my favorite cousins. I also have a close-knit friend group who I not only deeply enjoy the company of, but I take full advantage of the writing material they provide. Everybody knows there’s a possibility they’ll find themselves in my work.
If you want to know more about my power of bringing Black love to the masses, indulge in one of my books. You will surely find bits and pieces of my mind scattered throughout.
